Apple Crisp

Wondering what to do with all those apples from your recent trip to the market or Carter Mountain? Here’s the perfect, delicious solution! Beware: this recipe does contain…sugar!

4 medium apples (peeled and sliced)
3/4 packed brown sugar (plus a little aside to sprinkle on apples)
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup quick cooking oats
1/3 cup applesauce*
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus a little aside for sprinkling as well)
3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Heat oven to 375.
Spread apples in pan and sprinkle with a little cinnamon and brown sugar.
Mix remaining ingredients and evenly distribute over apples.
Bake about 30 minutes, or until top is golden brown.

We give our toddler the crisp by itself, but after his bedtime, we like to add a little vanilla ice cream to ours… don’t tell!

*Most recipes call for 1/3 cup butter, but we play around with it. The more applesauce we use, the less “crisp” it really is. Play around with 1/2 butter, 1/2 applesauce to get it a little more like the crisp we’re all used to. And feel free to post comments if you have other suggestions!
